How to eat healthy on a budget

A strict budget shouldn’t compromise eating healthily. A few simple changes to the way we shop can make all the difference.

  • Plan your meals by shopping in bulk and limit to a weekly shop;
  • Cook larger portions, you can always freeze the left overs;
  • Don’t shop for food when hungry, stick to the shopping list;
  • Avoid processed foods, they are never as healthy as fresh food and work out more expensive in the long run;
  • Consider purchasing more generic brands. The quality is often the same as named brands, the difference is usually in the marketing;
  • Cut down on meat. As well as the health and environmental benefits, it will significantly reduce your food bill;
  •  Regularly check what food you have available in the house. Take note what is left in the fridge and cupboards before going shopping. You can base some recipe ideas around the food you still have.

Monitoring your weekly shopping bill will allow you to keep a better track of your outgoings.
